This is a very well done Romantic Suspense by a new author to me. Ellie Manchester has had more than her share of loss and grief. She witnessed her mother's murder when she was 7 years old and now her father has died while flying his plane. His best friend thinks that he was also murdered after finding threatening blackmail letters locked in his friend's desk. Now that she's become an heiress of sorts, she's also become a target. Tanner Paxton has been hired to protect Ellie against her wishes and her knowledge. And the attraction is immediate. But he has issues ... and he has a secret. Ellie recently went through a break-up and has no wish to start another relationship. After several 'accidents' it becomes clear that someone wants her dead. Her ex-boyfriend? the man she thinks of as a second father? the man who murdered her mother? It may be someone closer than they think. Well-written, it was still just a tad predictable. Because the characters are so likeable, I can forgive the predictability. It's a sweet story with heavy emphasis on suspense. The romance is delightful and the intimate moments are not overly graphic, leaving much more to the imagination. Many thanks to the author / Red Coat PR / NetGalley who provided a digital copy in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.

I don’t often read contemporary or romantic suspense, but I highly enjoyed this one. While I admit, it took me a while to warm up to Ellie, there’s no denying that Pax was scrumptious from the moment he stepped onto the pages. There’s not much that I enjoy more than a deliciously tortured, yet honorable and protective man, and Pax had it in spades. As for Ellie, I think it was her complete and somewhat willful blindness to the danger that she faced that made me want to shake her so badly. As for Ellie, I think it was her complete and somewhat willful blindness to the danger that she faced that made me want to shake her so badly. Sure, there were those around her who were taking pains to make sure she was kept in the dark, but even so, considering the trauma she’d faced as a child, I would have hoped that she’d been a little less naive when Very Bad Things started happening around her. Through most of the book, though, I kept holding my breath, waiting for Ellie to find out that Pax was not exactly who he’d claimed to be, and instead was hired on to protect her from the blackmailer who’d targeted her father, and when the reveal happens, the fallout didn’t disappoint. I also enjoyed that while the mystery and danger certainly took center stage, this book never had that “heavy” vibe that a lot of romantic suspense suffers from, though plenty of action that kept the story moving along. There was also a wonderful twist, just when I thought I’d figured out the whodunit, that had me gasping. Of course, I have to mention that I do prefer my romances to be a bit on the steamy side, so the fade-to-black lovin’ isn’t really my style, though I know there are many readers out there who will appreciate it. Even so, I enjoyed the almost whirlwind feel to the romance, and couldn’t wait for them to get their Happily Ever After, which in the end was just as satisfying as I’d hoped. Overall, this was an excellent debut novel, and I, for one, can’t wait to see what this author has in store for us next. A very solid 4.5/5 Stars For the sake of full disclosure and in accordance with FCC regulations, please note that I received this book free of charge from the author in exchange for an honest review, and that I have personally known this author for several years prior to her pursuing a writing career.

Throw on top of that the polite “please and thank you” feel with the overly descriptive phrases regarding the characters’ actions, and I soon realized this was going to wind up in my “did not finish” pile. OK First, this is more a romance than a suspense or mystery. I was looking for more mystery and suspense. The writing was a bit basic. There was a lot of telling not a lot of showing. The mystery was also pretty easy to figure out. Overall, it was just ok. I wouldn't recommend this book unless you are primarily looking for a romance.

This book was well-written and there was nothing notably wrong with the characters or plot but I gave it three stars because it was so darn predictable. It was easy to guess who was behind the attempts on Ellie's life and why. It was easy to guess who was behind the attempts on Ellie's life and why. And of course, Ellie and Pax are attracted to one another right off the bat, but what ruined it for me was when Ellie resisted then suddenly has this epiphany about life and how she isn't living hers to the fullest so she decides Pax is the only one who can save her from her fate. She begs him to "make her feel alive"again. Which of course means having sex with her. And Pax, being the fine, upstanding young man that he is, sacrifices himself in order to make her happy. Please, he'd been wanting to get into her pants from the get go. Her plea was just the excuse he'd been looking for. Then there was the end where the hero gets taken out, the heroine forcibly taken against her will, and then said hero miraculously knows where she's been taken and rides to the rescue. However, Pax taught her self-defense moves so I was really disappointed when all she does is hit the bad guy over the head with a rock. Then when confronted a second time . . . Well, I'll let you read it for yourself. This could have been a very good book with appealing characters and plenty of suspense with just a few minor adjustments. Ellie witnessed her mother's murder when she was seven and it was then her father took to drowning his sorrows in a bottle of alcohol. He was never the same again. Now he's dead from an airplane crash. Authorities believe he'd been drinking when he decided to pilot his own plane and crashed. Ellie, in her grief, turns to her father's best friend, Ted, who manages the family's airline. When they receive threatening letters leading them to believe Ellie's life is in danger, Ted wants to hire a bodyguard but Ellie is against it so he goes behind her back and hires Pax. Pax moves in next door (conveniently) and takes a job at the airline (also conveniently) then manages to show up wherever Ellie goes, saving her life a couple of times in the process. The two of them start dating. The entire time they are together Pax is trying to figure out who is targeting her. But alas, Ellie discovers the truth about Pax being her bodyguard and tells him she never wants to see him again. Of course she won't listen to any explanation he might have for deceiving her so he does the next best thing in order to protect her, he arranges for her to be kidnapped. Sort of. Like I said, too predictable with nothing much original about it. I had trouble even finishing it.

After reading some positive reviews for Ulterior Motives, I was looking forward to this story. I seem to be in the minority, but it didn't work for me. It seemed really cliche and the plot and the characters were underdeveloped. The writing style didn't engage me as I felt it was more tell versus show. I also felt like I was getting a play by play versus a well crafted story. There are so many "then this" or "then that" that the story telling felt dry and monotone and didn't pull me in. (In one paragraph we had "Then, he reappeared...Then, he went to work putting...Pax then began...") I wasn't the least bit intrigued by the "mystery". There aren't very many characters in this book, which makes things a bit obvious. So it felt a little too contrived and the set up was just for the romance. And the romance for me was so-so. I never felt vested in either Ellie or Pax and they felt like two-dimensional stereotypes. There was a little twist at the end, but I wasn't vested enough to feel anything. The setting itself seemed underdeveloped as well. Manchester Avionics (I think that was the name) just didn't feel like a real company, but more like a Hollywood setting. What business really happened there? The whole story felt like props and cliches. She works long hours and then she can disappear and the work goes on? It all felt contrived. I do want to thank NetGalley, Red Coat PR and Ms. Hale for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. I wished I liked it more, but...

Ellie & Pax in this book are too cute, but I really loved all the tensionbetween them, this wasn't going to be an easy love story to start, because Pax is only there to protect Ellie's life, because after witnessing her Mother's death, years later her father dies in a Plane Crash, and now Ellie seems to be the next target, and she isn't aware that Pax was hired to get close and protect her. Ellie can't be sure who to trust with everything going on, and that's what makes this a 5 star read to me. Not only do we get these two people and their attraction for each other, but we also have the mystery and murder plot hanging over Ellie's head until the very end. I was on the edge of my seat listening to this book, and I cannot wait to read/listen to more by this author. Her narrator did an amazing job with this story, and was a perfect fit. I think everyone should check out this book, no matter if your a fan of suspense novels, or romance novels or something in between! Great listen! *I was given a copy of audiobook in exchange for honest review.

I received this book from the author in a goodreads giveaway. It was an interesting read, but unfortunately, I figured out the villain almost instantly and then I was waiting to see if I was correct. Elizabeth Manchester (Ellie) inherits her family's aviation business when her father is killed during an early morning solo flight. He had been investigating her mother's murder for years and was closing in on the murderer, but he hadn't told anyone of his suspicions before he died. As he began heavily drinking when his wife was killed, the accident wasn't regarded as a murder. When his personal belongings were checked, threats against Ellie were uncovered. Ted Bartley, the head of security for the company and an uncle figure for Ellie, hired Tanner Paxton, the owner of a private security firm, to guard Ellie. He was instructed that he was not to tell her about the surveillance. She had been present at her mother's murder (she was 7 at the time) and had worked diligently to become very self-reliant in response to the helplessness she felt at that time. The story is primarily a romance, and I was expecting more of a mystery. I did enjoy it, but it wasn't exactly what I had expected.

What will happen when she finds out Pax was her bodyguard? There are a lot of pieces that need to be put together to solve this mystery of who killed her Mother and who is after her. Take a chance on this book, you're sure to love it.

I had a lot of fun reading Ulterior Motives. This story was full of a sweet romance between two people who just could NOT make their bodies understand that they could not be together. Like most of the other online reviewers, I too felt that this story was fairly predictable. About 50% of the way through the book I had figured out who was behind the threats and even the motive was fairly obvious. There was more romance than mystery/suspense with this book, but for me there wasn't even enough heat to keep that part going through the book. ** ARC received from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review **

3.5 stars. This was a nice change. It moved pretty quick (it isn't a long book, though) and it was somewhat predictable but I'm glad the author did something with the villain that made some sense rather than something completely random out of thin air. The main characters were likeable as well.
